I'd prefer using an open-source alternative, like Mattermost or Rocket.Chat.

If you're interested, please read this article on Why not use Slack for FOSS projects.

Anyways, that is not to me, I'm just saying it'd be great if we used one of these FOSS Slack alternatives. But if we end up using Slack, I'll still use it :)

Not insisting on Slack, any alternatives are welcome! :)

Not sure what benefit that would provide, since we already have an IRC Channel (plus web client) for short-term communication and a forum for persistent communication. Slack and its alternatives are somewhere in the middle, which is nice, but I think we've got that covered.

Are there specific cases where you'd prefer something along the lines of Slack? If so, why?

IRC Channel and forum is definitely enough I guess. :)

One question I have is why phpBB? It's so 90's ;)

How about an upgrade to Discourse or something like that?

An interesting discussion of phpBB vs Discourse is here.

I know it's obviously a subjective topic, but I find Discourse much nicer to navigate and use than phpBB.

Discourse has Markdown, which, IMO, is better thsn bbcode. One or another is good for me.

Or the community is still fairly small that doesn't need changes of a certain magnitude?

This is a one man show, after all...
Adding a few more developers and admins and a more broad userbase would push some necessary changes, though... ;)

Thank you. :D I pretty much agree with Cross here.

I definitely wouldn't rule out switching to a different communication medium, but right now I don't really feel the need for it. Yes, phpbb is totally 90s, but that also means a lot of people know and are familiar with it, it's stable and battle-tested, and more importantly, I can manage to set it up and maintain it without pouring additional hours into it.

Also in the case of Discourse in specific, and I know that this is 100% subjective, I don't really like the feel of it. The sample forum they let you visit when you click the try button is stylish and all, but.. I don't know. Is it harder to read and get an overview content-wise, or is that just me?
