As you might have read, the Tilemaps plugin is now out there. Let's use this opportunity to organize a small game jam and see what the new plugin can do for us.

My plan is to set up a game jam event on itch.io, which will provide us with some infrastructure for collecting and reviewing entries, as well as voting (if we want that). Here's what I have in mind:

  • Starting 12.08 and ending 12.09, one month to come up with a prototype. This should account for differences in everyone's schedule and real life stuff people have going on.
  • Any genre. Rpg, platformer, puzzle, adventure, action, casual, whatever. The only requirement is that it has to use tilemaps in some way.
  • Let's have a set of three themes, something non-restrictive, but that can be used as inspiration.
  • Either no voting, or voting based on criteria that aren't as bland as "graphics" or "sound". Each theme could be a criterion and users would vote on how good they felt it matched.

To get this started, please post your theme suggestions, up to three themes per person. Once we have acquired a pool of themes, I'll put up a vote and we'll take the best three. Also, let me know if you'd prefer a game jam with, or without ranking. I'm undecided on this one.

Edit: Here's the jam event on itch.io! You'll also find the list of themes there and an overview on the rules. Happy jamming everyone!

Great idea!

Themes:
Darkness falls
Rising trigger
Weapon of choice

Ranking or not, as long as there are games made with Duality there's a win already!

A month long is great, I'm all for it, but for some people it might be too much...

Edit: Because of dumbness.

Allright, I'm in!
  • You are the Weapon
  • You are the Thought
  • You are the Tilemap ;)
edit: I don't think ranking is necessary, but it can be a good motivation for people to play other's games, like at ludum dare

I'm (probably) in, but by 12.08 and 12.09 do you mean twelfth August to twelfth September?

It's a month long jam, so you're right.

Themes :
    Growth
    Boredom
    Reach the impossible

I don't think voting is necessary, but I wouldn't mind it. Also, is open-sourcing mandatory ?

Thanks for clarifying.

On another note, exams start straight on 14th August. Darn.

Here's some theme suggestions I thought up:
  • Manipulating Time
  • Modular Character (your character is composed of different "parts")
  • The Floor is Lava

EDIT:

For some reason, I like that idea a lot...

Thanks for all your suggestions so far, there are some really neat themes in the pool already :D I'll wait a few more days and then I'll turn this thread into a poll for determining the three we'll use.

Gathering the overall feedback, I'd do a ranked game jam, but aiming more for a fun ranking, rather than a serious competition.

Nope. Encouraged, but not mandatory at all!

Ranking wise, we could do like LDJam, where there's various components that can be ranked. So there's not a clear winner per-se.
