I'm getting this error a lot when launching the game from the editor, but not always, and I'm not sure if the same thing happens using the launcher directly:

Once the error appears the sound stops working until the editor is restarted, and then it works again, for a while.
I'm not worried about the editor (it opens so fast that restarting takes only one second), but the idea of players having trouble listening to the game crossed my mind.

Any ideas on how to avoid it?

Duality uses OpenAL for audio support. Unlike OpenGL, an OpenAL implementation is not part of every audio driver, so what Duality does to ensure that it has audio on every system is check the system directory for an appropriately named file, and if it isn't there, deploy an OpenAL Soft implementation locally. This is what's indicated by the log in:

I haven't seen a system so far where audio failed completely, mostly due to that software implementation being there when needed.

What's really strange though is that it seems to work sometimes in your case, and sometimes not. Can you collect the following data?

  • Whether or not a file named openal32.dll is in the Duality directory while Duality still runs.
  • Whether or not that file is there before starting it and after shutting it down.
  • The logfile of the run in question.

All of the above in the following cases:

  • You have audio / don't have audio
  • In the editor / launcher (Note they have different logfiles)

I've done a few tests.

Doing this the audio failed:
1. Launching from the editor, sound working. openal32.dll is there.
2. Playing in the editor, sound working. openal32.dll is there.
3. Launching from the editor, sound not working. openal32.dll is there.

After that I did a full machine restart, and now the audio is always ok:

5. Open the editor.

I just played in the editor and using the launcher (from the editor) alternatively, 20 times, and everything is ok.

The dll is always there, and after starting the editor the sound worked fine, so my guess is sometimes the audio was not relased. But testing the game in other machine (only with the launcher) it seems to work fine every time, and right now it's also working in the main computer, so maybe I have some kind of driver conflict.
If it fails again I'll upload the new logs.

Sound just failed, launching from the editor:
openal32.dll is there.
No idea why. In this session I only used the editor, VS2015 and Firefox. No sound or video tools. Just a fresh start.

No, you core plugin should be unrelated to this. All the backend code is initialized before any of your regular game or plugin code runs and the log clearly shows that, for some reason, the audio backend sometimes fails to initialize on your system - because it sometimes fails to load the OpenAL implementation.

This sometimes is really weird. I've seen (and fixed) incompatibilities due to x86 / x64 and the OpenAL implementation, but all of these were at least consistent for the same machine. I can imagine no case where there would be a "random" component in whether or not loading the file fails.

I know that the DllNotFoundException that is logged has a bit of a misleading name, as it is also thrown when the dll is found, but there was a failure during load. So maybe there is a problem with the OpenAL soft implementation on your system.

First, let's disable Duality's OpenAL Soft fallback. To do that, delete "OpenALSoft32.dll" in the plugins folder. Don't do that for your release version, this is just for us testing. Done? Ok. Next, delete the "openal32.dll" in your project's root folder, it should sit next to the Duality binaries.

When you run game or editor, you should ahve consistently no audio. Now download the newest version of OpenAl soft from here and put the appropriate dll in your project root folder and rename it to "openal32.dll". When you run launcher or editor, it now should consistently have audio.

Can you verify this?

I removed both, but when I launch the editor or game openal32.dll appears again in Duality's folder and I have sound. Is that expected?
If editor or game are running, I can't remove openal32.dll.
After installing openal from the official site the log message is different:

No, that is definitely not expected. ^^ Since the two files you deleted are what is copied and renamed to generate that file, I have no idea where that would come from. (Otherwise yes, that would be normal) Do you happen to start Duality in a non-standard way, e.g. using a different working than execution directory or something similar?

When you install OpenAL drivers and Duality detects that, it will stop using its software fallback. If you no longer have issues now, that could be a slight indication towards OpenAL Soft having a problem on your system.

When testing this I was launching directly from the executables, no hyperlink, no VS.
